Designer at Givebutter shows how he uses different AI tools for growth design

Howdy folks! Below are 3 key design tactics I learned from interviewing Clint McManaman at Givebutter about his AI growth design process. What’s your biggest takeaway?

1. Proactively find friction in the product

Clint doesn't wait for a PM to hand him a PRD. Every week he goes friction hunting on his own, looking for where users are getting stuck across onboarding, activation, and drop-off points.

Granola records his meetings so he can pull out the exact friction points stakeholders mentioned. Enterpret gives him the voice of the customer aka how users actually feel when using the product. And Hex shows him what users are actually doing in the product. Together these tools show Clint the friction points in the product experience!

2. Use AI to run growth experiments supafast

Clint designs growth experiments using two AI tools depending on the job. When he's inventing something brand new he goes to Claude Code so he can break away from the existing design system and explore freely. When he's refining a product flow he uses Magic Patterns.

And because his design system lives inside Magic Patterns now whatever he builds is production ready. He literally hands engineers a Magic Patterns link as the handoff which cuts out a ton of back and forth. So now Clint is able to ship new experiments in 2 weeks instead of a month!

3. Share context async with stakeholders

Once Clint has a prototype worth sharing he doesn’t schedule a meeting. He records a quick Loom walking through what he explored and why, then drops it into a Slack thread with the prototype links.

It turns into an async meeting that happens without a meeting. Stakeholders drop comments and questions when it suits them, and anything that needs a deeper discussion gets picked back up in his weekly design sync. Show and tell minus the calendar chaos. I think this is a genius strategy for stakeholder alignment!
